A sustainable future
Our desire to leave this land in a better condition than how we found it has driven our commitment to regenerative principles. By managing grazing responsibly, we can ensure there will continue to be healthy and prosperous land for future generations.
This move towards a more ecological way of being has demonstrated that both sustainable and profitable pastoralism work hand in hand, rather than against each other.
Best practice rotational grazing
Sturt Vale Pastoral have adopted the latest AgriWebb software system for assisting in the responsible management of livestock.
The innovative system allows us to reduce total grazing pressure by mapping grazing areas and recording animal movements across the property.
The real-time mob and individual tracking, along with duration reporting, assists us in ensuring we minimise our livestock’s footprint on our pastures.
Total grazing pressure fencing
Along with the utilisation of AgriWebb, we have also heavily invested in stronger and more strategically placed fencing.
In total, 175km of total grazing pressure fencing has been installed over the past 4 years, with a further 150km fencing scheduled for installation across the next few years.
In addition to managing animal movements, the fencing allows us to strategically isolate water points, assisting in the trapping of Rangeland Goats and the control of livestock during muster.
Total grazing pressure fencing has been a critical piece of infrastructure to assist our Human Induced Regeneration at Sturtvale, in line with our feral and native animal management strategy.
Smarter livestock tracking
In 2023, Sturt Vale Pastoral will see the introduction of EID Ceres tags to our livestock, linking the animals directly to satellite for long-term sensing and tracking. These state-of-the-art ear tags feature geo-location for greater traceability and provenance of livestock - whilst giving us added control over grazing management.
The tags assist with locating livestock remotely and they can assist in alerting us to possible stock theft, illness or birthing.
Another way innovation and data can be used to increase our operational efficiency.
Maximum water efficiency
Since 2022, our water sources have been equipped with FarmBot water level monitor and sensor systems. This technology provides us with remote monitoring and reporting of any real-time issues. The system detects leaks and faults, along with livestock water consumption, allowing us full visibility over one of our greatest and most precious resources.
With Sturt Vale’s average annual rainfall sitting at approximately 208ml, it is critical we conserve and optimise water.
Additionally, FarmBot reduces the time spent driving to remote water sources, freeing up hours and allowing us to keep our vehicles off the road.
